Duke of Monmouth
(b.1649 d.1685)

Illegitimate child of Charles II and mistress Lucy Walter, James Scott (Duke of Monmouth) landed with a band of followers in an attempt to capture the throne of James II. Whig opponents of James II saw him as a possible alternative. Believing himself to be the rightful heir to the throne, he garnered support from Protestant circles. His army landed, took a few small towns, but things quickly soured. Soundly defeated at the Battle of Sedgemore, he was captured and quickly beheaded.
