Duke of Monmouth's Invasion and Rebellion

Leading a band of followers committed to his claim to the throne, Monmouth was able to land and achieve some early limited success. Hoping that he would be able to rally Protestant support for his cause, he declared himself to be the true heir to the crown of his father, Charles I. His effort was quickly crushed, ending at the Battle of Sedgemore, and he was captured and executed.
