The University of Georgia is the nation’s oldest state university, chartered in 1785. The historic main entrance to the institution is marked by the Arch. Its three columns represent wisdom, justice and moderation.  The Arch is the official symbol of the University of Georgia.

The Arch has long been the gateway between the university and Athens. The downtown business district lies directly across Broad Street.

The Arch marks the beginning of North Campus, the most beautiful and historic portion of the University of Georgia campus. Structures and majestic oak trees in this section date back to antebellum days.

The Chapel, built in 1832, is perhaps the loveliest building on campus.  Originally, students were required to attend daily services here, and the building was a central part of campus life. Today, the restored facility is used primarily for lectures, meetings and other small gatherings.

Directly behind the Chapel is a bell tower, identified by one of the many historic markers that dot the North Campus landscape. The bell was originally on top of the Chapel and rang for worship service, the beginning and end of class, and in emergencies. Now the bell is rung only by enthusiastic students or alumni celebrating athletic victories or other special occasions.
