Professional Biographical Information:
André B. Barbic joined the University of Georgia
in 2006
as the assistant director of the Dean Rusk Center - International,
Comparative and Graduate Legal Studies.
Barbic assists in all aspects of management at the Rusk
Center as well as with developing organizational linkages and
increasing student involvement in and public awareness of the center's
efforts. He also supervises publications, including the center's
newsletter and Occasional Papers Series, advances initiatives for
overall institution-building and organizes center conferences and
lectures.
Barbic was instrumental in establishing the Georgia Law
Summer Program in China, an ABA-approved study abroad program, which he
currently administers. Partnering with Tsinghua University in
Beijing and Fudan University in Shanghai, this program provides a
unique opportunity for study in both of China's two largest cities.
Barbic also helped to establish several internship opportunities at
leading law firms in China for UGA law students participating in the
summer initiative.
Before joining the Rusk Center's staff, Barbic served as
a summer associate with the law firms Robins, Kaplan, Miller &
Ciresi in Atlanta and Zhong Xin in Shanghai. In Atlanta, he
worked primarily on matters related to property insurance defense. In
Shanghai, Barbic drafted banking contracts, assisted in the negotiation
of real estate transactions and conducted research on aviation law
issues. Between 1998 and 2002, he worked as a conference officer
for the Secretariat of the United Nations, where he served as a liaison
between the U.N. Secretariat, delegations, nongovernmental
organizations and the press. At the U.N., Barbic worked with
several different assemblies and committees, including the General
Assembly, the Security Council and the Sixth Committee on Legal
Affairs. After completing his first year of law school, he
returned to the U.N. as an intern in the Office of Legal Affairs (OLA)
during the summer of 2003.
Barbic earned his Juris Doctor cum laude from the
University of Georgia, where he served as conference editor of the
Georgia Journal of International and Comparative Law and as
co-president of the Georgia Society for International and Comparative
Law. He earned his undergraduate degrees in theatre and
philosophy at Loyola University of Chicago. Over the past 15
years, he has performed in more than 40 theatrical productions in
Atlanta, Dallas, Chicago and New York. He has also acted in
several independent films, one of which was recently screened at New
York's Anthology Film Archives.
